The
Bax Duo was formed in 1998 as a viola and piano ensemble, specialising
in British repertoire from the 1900s to the present day. Both musicians
studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where their shared interest in
English 20th Century music formed the foundation for their partnership.
Many composers performed by the duo are known for their symphonic and
chamber music, but the legacy of their duo repertoire also occupies an
important place in the history of British music.
Composers such as York Bowen and Sir Arnold Bax have left a wealth of
repertoire for the viola and piano, fresh from the era which discovered
the viola as a solo instrument. Almost all the works played by the duo
were dedicated to the great violists of the generation, many of whom premiered
the works with the composers themselves at the piano.
The Bax Duo have recorded two
world premieres by York Bowen & Gordon Jacob under the Anglo Chamber
Series label. Other composers recorded include Sir Arnold Bax & Ralph
Vaughan-Williams.
In performance The Bax Duo recreate the style and presentation of a chamber
recital of the early 1900s. The programme is introduced by Gregory
and background information given about each of the works. Concerts usually
include several British pieces, a solo piano interlude and a contrasting
work in the Classical or Romantic style, and can be tailored to suit specific
requirements.
